Kaizer Chiefs defender Happy Mashiane has declared his readiness to fulfil the expectations of his coach, Nasreddine Nabi, at the club.
The 27-year-old has spent several seasons on the fringes of the Chiefs squad, and his departure seemed imminent with Nabi’s arrival.
The club’s acquisition of Bradley Cross and Bongani Sam appeared to solidify their left-back options, while Thatayaone Ditlhokwe established himself as the regular in the position over the past two months.
However, Ditlhokwe’s subsequent exit has presented Mashiane with a renewed opportunity to reclaim his place in the team, mirroring the successful comebacks of players like “TT” and Sibongiseni Mthethwa under Nabi’s leadership this season.
Following the departure of Ditlhokwe, Mashiane seized the opportunity to step into the starting line-up at left-back and delivered a performance that has clearly boosted his confidence.
This was on Saturday as Chiefs beat Chippa United 3-0 in the Nedbank Cup Last 16 at the FNB Stadium in Soweto. They will face Stellenbosch FC in the quarterfinals.
MASHIANE TO FIGHT FOR CHIEFS SPOT AFTER DITLHOKWE DEPARTURE
Despite limited recent playing time with only seven games in all competitions under his belt this season, Mashiane’s impressive display in a crucial match has reignited his motivation and solidified his commitment to contributing to the team’s success.
“Obviously, I hadn’t played a lot in a while,” said Mashiane “So coming back into that big game was a big motivation for me. I had to go in and give my best.
“With the guidance of the coach and his technical staff, I felt confident and it turned out great. Personally, I am doing everything I can to give the coach what he wants from me.”
Meanwhile, Mashiane expressed deep gratitude to the Amakhosi faithful, acknowledging their vibrant support as a key factor in the team’s improved performances.
“I want to thank our wonderful fans for always being there for us. We love how they cheer us up with encouragement and we will really appreciate a big turnout at FNB to support us against SuperSport. It really helps us. Without them, we are nothing,” he says in conclusion,” he added.
