Former Kaizer Chiefs attacker Khama Billiat stays in Zimbabwe despite offers

Khama Billiat at Kaizer Chiefs

Despite widespread speculation of a return to the Betway Premiership, former Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat has chosen to remain in Zimbabwe, joining debutante side Scottland FC for the upcoming 2025 season.

This decision ends months of speculation surrounding the 34-year-old attacker, who had revitalized his career in the Zimbabwean top flight league last season at Yadah FC.

While Chiefs were reportedly interested in bringing him back to South Africa, and Sekhukhune United made a formal offer, Billiat also received interest from two Saudi Arabian clubs.

Ultimately, he opted to stay in his home country, with the move to Scottland FC finalized on January 2nd, 2025, parting ways with Yadah after a successful season.

BILLIAT REJECTS PSL AND SAUDI ARABIA OFFERS

According to FARPost, Billiat’s decision tto remain in Zimbabwe, even with offers from the PSL and Saudi Arabia, is rooted in a strong connection to his homeland and a close relationship with Scottland FC owner Scott Sakupwanya.

“He is enjoying the love at home,” the source said, highlighting the overwhelming support Billiat received upon his return.

While acknowledging that a player of his calibre could have moved elsewhere, the source emphasized the importance of Billiat reconnecting with his roots. Sakupwanya’s influence was also key: “The club owner played a crucial role… their relationship is strong.”

The FARPost source suggested that Billiat may even retire in Zimbabwe, explaining that the offers he received were ultimately outweighed by the “peace of mind” he finds playing at home. “The decision was always clear,” the source concluded, noting that Billiat quickly settled his future after leaving Yadah FC and intends to finish his career in his home nation.

Following his departure from Amakhosi in 2023, Billiat returned to Zimbabwe after failing to secure another club in the Betway Premiership. His arrival was met with fanfare, making him the highest-paid player in the Zimbabwean league and revitalizing Yadah FC, a team that had struggled against relegation since their 2016 promotion.

In his debut season in the Zimbabwe Premier Division, Billiat was named second runner-up for Player of the Season, won the Fan’s Player of the Year award, and contributed an impressive 13 goals and 11 assists in just 26 appearances.

Furthermore, his impact off the field has been significant. Yadah FC owner Prophet Walter Magaya revealed that Billiat’s jersey sales generated a record-breaking R2.1 million for the club.
