Former Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has been appointed the sole head coach of AmaZulu FC after Vusi Vilakazi resigned from his co-coaching position.
When Zwane joined AmaZulu in October 2024, the team faced a dire situation, rooted to the bottom of the Betway Premiership after three consecutive losses. As such Zwane and Vilakazi replaced Pablo Franco Martin after a struggling start to the season.
Zwane moved to AmaZulu following his depature at Chiefs, where he spent 24 years in different roles.
In KZN, Zwane and his co-coach Vilakazi successfully revitalised the Usuthu squad, guiding them to a current fifth-place position with 26 points from 19 games.
This climb culminated in a decisive 3-0 victory over Magesi FC at Moses Mabhida Stadium in their most recent game. While their partnership yielded significant league improvement, they were recently eliminated from the Nedbank Cup’s Round of 16 by Marumo Gallants.
Vilakazi cited personal matters that require his urgent attention as the reason for his departure. AmaZulu FC president Sandile Zungu has accepted Vilakazi’s resignation and wished him well in his future endeavors.
AmaZulu Football Club has announced the resignation of Co-Head Coach Vusi Vilakazi, who wished to step down with immediate effect,” reads the club statement released on Tuesday.
“In his letter of resignation, Vilakazi referred to the personal matters (which) require his urgent attention, making it impossible for him to fully commit to his responsibilities at the club.
“Club President Sandile Zungu has accepted Vilakazi’s request to be relieved of his duties with immediate effect. This transition leaves Arthur “Phakimpi” Zwane as the sole Head Coach, going forward.
“Bidding farewell to Vilakazi, Zungu expressed his gratitude, stating, “On behalf of the entire Usuthu family — players, technical and administrative personnel, supporters and board members — we wish Mpiyakhe all the best in his future endeavours.”
Amakhosi legend Zwane will lead AmaZulu in their upcoming match against Cape Town City FC on March 2nd.
