Left-back Edmilson Dove has opened up on Kaizer Chiefs defence struggles, as he acknowledged they have lost their defensive quality.
The Soweto giants have so far conceded 28 goals in the 23 Betway Premiership matches. In terms of conceding, Marumo Gallants have the worst record having conceded 34 goals.
Gallants are followed by AmaZulu FC who have let through 32 goals. Amakhosi are third on the list with 28 goals conceded.
Meanwhile, the Nasreddine Nabi coached side has only managed to keep five clean sheets this season. Additionally, Wandile Duba and Mduduzi Shabalala are the top scorers with four goals each.
EDMILSON DOVE REFUSES TO SHOULDER BLAME ON DEFENDERS
While addressing the media on Thursday in Naturena, Dove refused to shoulder the blame on defenders, saying the whole team needs fixing.
“Defending doesn’t start at the back. It’s a whole unit problem. As I said there are things we need to fix from the back to the front,” Dove said.
“Because when we concede goals, not only defenders concede. It’s something that we need to fix as a unit not as a department. Yes we have conceded silly goals at times but we choose not to focus on what we cannot control. All those games are gone.
“I think now we have to focus on what will minimise our mistakes and make sure that we score when we get a chance.”
Dove pleaded with the club’s supporters to remain steadfast despite the fact that they are below par in all respects.
“To our supporters, we can’t ask anything more than what they have already given us through thick and thin even though the season hasn’t gone the way we wanted it to. Its just a message to them, not to give up on us. We need their energy, we need their support, which they have shown throughout the season.
“Sometimes we make promises that we are not able to fulfil but we want to try and give them better results. Its frustrating even for us as we look at ourselves, this club deserves to be at the top,” Dove added.
