Defeat doesn’t diminish Da Gama’s respect for Chiefs

Even in the aftermath of a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs, Magesi head coach Owen da Gama displayed immense respect for the Amakhosi.

Following Magesi and Amakhosi’s Tuesday evening clash at FNB Stadium in Soweto, Da Gama offered high praise for the Soweto giants’ overall quality and performance.

The first 45 minutes saw a balanced contest between the two sides, with both goalkeepers facing minimal threats and clear-cut chances proving elusive.

However, Chiefs’ head coach Nasreddine Nabi implemented tactical adjustments in the second half, resulting in an increased tempo and ultimately breaking down the Magesi defence.

Ashley Du Preez scored the only goal of the match in the second half to hand Chiefs all three points at home.

“The first half we thought we were still in the game, we could have broken in and scored, but unfortunately it never occurred and against teams like Chiefs when you get an opportunity you must take it,” said Da Gama.

“But let’s be honest Chiefs were the better team today [Tuesday], they attacked more and deserved the win. That’s how football works. We’re babies in this league, we have been trying to fix here and there since I came in, it’s a process.”

Da Gama added: “Sometimes we get it right, with very good performances, but this was not one. We gave the ball away unnecessary, not defending well but there was no excuses.

“We gave it our best shot against a wounded team. Chiefs are a very good team who gave a very good performance against Sundowns. We tried to play as best as possible but all we can say is congratulations to Chiefs who won the game.”
