Gavin Hunt’s honest assessment of Chiefs winger Saile

Christian Saile of Kaizer Chiefs

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt has offered a candid evaluation of Kaizer Chiefs loanee Christian Saile, stating the player “needs a lot of work”.

Hunt’s comments came after SuperSport’s impressive 4-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in a Betway Premiership match at FNB Stadium on Tuesday. This result marked Chiefs’ worst league defeat of the 2024/25 season.

Saile, who failed to score for his parent club in the current season, has made an immediate impact at SuperSport scoring twice in his first four games in all competitions. Notably, he scored against his former team, Chiefs, and his first goal was in Matsatsantsa’s 2-0 Nedbank Cup win over Magesi FC.

He joined the Tshwane side on January 28th, but the club did not disclose the terms of the deal. In contrast, Chiefs described Saile’s transfer as a ‘strategic swap deal’ for Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport.

COACH HUNT GIVES STRAIGHT TALK ON SAILE

Hunt said that Saile has a lot to learn and needs to improve as a player. “Christian was never in our thought process; he was never to come here,’ he said.

“He just got thrown in my lap to say ‘Listen, Morris is going, and we’re getting Saile’,. “So I said, ‘Oh okay, what am I going to do with him?”. I have to try and find what to do with him, but he’s got two or three goals now.

“He needs a lot of work. There are a lot of things you need to do, but he’s not our player. I think he goes back to [Chiefs]. I’m not sure. I’m not in the boardroom.

“He can play across the front pitch. He gives us a bit of outlet, and we don’t have that,” added the outspoken Hunt.
